  • Theodore playing on break, Mama at her desk; and I am parenting. Most days of Remote Learning find us in this configuration, like a well-oiled machine.

  • Susan and I exercise on alternate days. This summer, I swam at Riverbank State Park and she ran in Central Park. Now, the pool is closed so I walk quickly. Most mornings Theodore says, "Have a nice swim, Poppa," but today, for some reason, when I kissed him goodbye, he had a fit, crying, carrying on, and refusing to let me go. As Susan tried to comfort him she said, "Go! We'll be fine."<br />
<br />
I left with a slightly heavy heart, toeing the line between guilt, confusion, and the sense of freedom that exercise brings to my entire day.<br />

Upon my return, Theodore was in better spirits. After breakfast he happily posed for me.

  • A milk spill makes the shape of a cartoon head on the dinner table. I have taken it upon myself to fill Theodore's cup half-way at every meal, just in case.

  • Challah crumbs, Shabbat candles and Transformer toys adorn our table. Everyone is welcome for Shabbat.

  • Susan working at her desk with toys on the floor and laundry on the drying rack. If we didn't teach and trust Theodore to recognize the value of cleaning up every night I would go crazy. Susan has the incredible ability not to be affected by the exact things that make me crazy. I am working on being more tolerant but it comes slowly at best.

  • Theodore napping on the blue couch during a remote class. Neither of us can imagine what his and his classmate's minds and psyches might be going through during this time.

  • Our monthly calendar. It's amazing we get so much done when some days feel like climbing a mountain with no end in sight.

  • Late afternoon light in our living room. Some of Theodore's toys are blocking the French Doors, with Susan's table and chair on the right.

  • Theodore looking upset when in actuality he was playing around. There are times when I know he knows better than I wish about how to upset us.

  • Susan napping on our bed, burried face first in multiple pillows. Theodore's stuffed bunny, Floppy, is on top of the heap.

  • We had hot chocolate after school today and Theodore spilled his twice. When I suggested that we not make another batch he wasn't exactly agreeable. We ran out of milk but peace reins triumphant once again; and now it's time for a scotch.

  • My desk, with several reminders of things to do. A photograph of my father from when I was a kid brings some calms to the mess. Little did I know that a month later Covid would put Theodore on Full Remote and the reminders would begin backing up.

  • Theodore napping in his crib. I never stop marveling at how beautiful and amazing it is to have a child, especially when they are sleeping.

  • For a long time Theodore loved swinging as high as possible. He no longer fits into the baby swings and I can't wait to "fly together" on the big kid ones.

  • Three "bubble making gloves" drying in our bathroom, backlit by late afternoon sun.

  • Theodore now loves to draw. Today for a class exercise, Theodore wanted us to draw ourselves "trick or treating" on Halloween, making sure we both had our masks on. He and I always say, "Stay safe and healthy" to friends and strangers when we say goodbye, so carrying that into our play makes perfect sense. However, the adult in me was struck by the profundity of his insistence.

  • Susan napping on our bed while Theodore and I play. He is facing the camera with a look of being caught doing something I didn't catch, knowing that whatever we say won't matter.

  • Susan on a client call while sitting against our bed on the floor of our bedroom. Some days it's the quietest and most private room in our flat.
